BACKGROUND: The diet proposed by the EAT-Lancet Commission, which supports both health and environmental sustainability, provides an opportunity to assess the sustainability of food-based dietary guidelines. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to assess the alignment of the 2019 Canada's Food Guide (CFG) with the EAT-Lancet diet. To do so, an index assessing adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet was developed and evaluated. METHODS: Data from 1147 adults were used from the cross-sectional PRÉDicteurs Individuals, Sociaux et Environnementaux (PREDISE) study conducted between 2015 and 2017 in the province of Québec. The EAT-Lancet Dietary Index (EAT-I) was developed to evaluate adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet. Adherence to the 2019 CFG was assessed using the Healthy Eating Food Index (HEFI)-2019. Associations between the HEFI-2019 score and component scores and the EAT-I score were examined using linear regression models. RESULTS: The mean EAT-I score (/80) in this population was 33.4 points [95% confidence interval (CI): 32.2, 34.6]. EAT-I scores were consistent with expected differences in diet quality between females and males (+6.9 points, 95% CI: 4.8, 9.0) and between adults aged 50-65 y and 18-34 y (+4.3 points, 95% CI: 1.6, 7.0). The mean HEFI-2019 (/80) score was 44.9 points (95% CI: 44.1, 45.7). The HEFI-2019 was strongly associated with the EAT-I (ß = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.72, 0.80). Among the 10 components of the HEFI-2019, components such as the whole-grain foods (ß =4.01, 95% CI: 3.49, 4.52), grain foods ratio (ß =3.65, 95% CI: 3.24, 4.07), plant-based protein foods (ß =2.41, 95% CI: 2.03, 2.78), and fatty acids ratio (ß =3.12, 95% CI: 2.72, 3.51) showed the strongest associations with the EAT-I. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that recommendations in the 2019 CFG are largely coherent with the EAT-Lancet diet underscoring the complementarity and compatibility of the 2019 CFG for sustainability and health promotion purposes.

The primary objective of this study was to examine how social desirability is associated with self-reported measures of dietary intakes and variables related to attitudes and behaviours towards eating. This analysis was conducted in 1083 adults (50.0% women) from the PREDISE study. Social desirability was assessed using the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding (BIDR) questionnaire, which includes two subscales: (1) self-deceptive enhancement (SDE), i.e., having an overly positive self-image and (2) impression management (IM), i.e., intentional response distortion to please. BIDR total score and IM subscore were positively associated with the Canadian Healthy Eating Index (C-HEI) (ß = 0.24 and ß = 0.50; p ≤ 0.0003), calculated using data from three self-administered 24 h food recalls. All BIDR scores were positively associated with self-determined motivation for eating regulation (0.03 ≤ ß ≤ 0.06; p < 0.0001), measured by the Regulation of Eating Behavior Scale, and with the intuitive eating score (0.02 ≤ ß ≤ 0.05; p < 0.0001). Also, all BIDR scores were negatively associated with hunger and disinhibition scores measured by the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (-0.17 ≤ ß ≤ -0.09; p < 0.0001). All these associations were adjusted for age, sex, BMI, and the education level. Furthermore, controlling for both dimensions of social desirability did not impact the magnitude of the association between self-determined motivation (the strongest predictor of healthy eating in the PREDISE study) and C-HEI. According to our results, associations are observed with diet quality, as well as with attitudes and behaviours towards eating; therefore, a measurement of social desirability responding would be pertinent in studies using those or related variables.

Women with a history of gestational diabetes (GDM) have difficulty maintaining a healthy diet after delivery. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) is effective in identifying the determinants of adopting a healthy diet. The objectives were to identify the determinants of the intention to adopt a healthy diet among the TPB constructs in women with (GDM+) and without (GDM-) a history of GDM, and to identify the beliefs associated with these constructs. The study was conducted in Québec (Canada) between 2009 and 2017. Data from 213 GDM+ and 91 GDM- women were analyzed. Women completed a questionnaire on the determinants of intention to adopt a healthy diet, defined as adherence to 2007 Canada's Food Guide. The subjective norm and perceived behavioral control (PBC) constructs were associated with the intention to adopt a healthy diet among GDM+ women (ß = 2.21 and ß = 4.37, respectively, p < 0.0001), whereas among GDM- women, PBC was the only construct associated with intention (ß = 0.78; p < 0.0001). More specifically among GDM+ women, the disapproval of a family member other than the partner (ß = 1.49; p = 0.0005), not feeling capable of adopting a healthy diet with access to food treats (ß = 1.58; p < 0.0001), lack of free time (ß = 1.31; p = 0.002), lack of information about healthy eating (ß = 1.02; p = 0.015) or lack of easy recipes to prepare (ß = 0.84; p = 0.042) was associated with a lower intention to adopt a healthy diet. Overall, among GDM+ women, different beliefs related to the subjective norm and PBC could be targeted to improve the eating habits of this specific population.

Introduction: Many dietary guidelines promote the substitution of animal proteins with plant-based proteins for health benefits but also to help transitioning toward more sustainable dietary patterns. The aim of this study was to examine the food and nutrient characteristics as well as the overall quality and costs of dietary patterns consistent with lower intakes of animal-based protein foods and with higher intakes of plant-based protein foods among French Canadian adults. Methods: Dietary intake data, evaluated with 24 h recalls, from 1,147 French-speaking adults of the PRÉDicteurs Individuels, Sociaux et Environnementaux (PREDISE) study conducted between 2015 and 2017 in Québec were used. Usual dietary intakes and diet costs were estimated with the National Cancer Institute's multivariate method. Consumption of animal- and plant-based protein foods was classified into quarters (Q) and differences in food and nutrient intakes, Healthy Eating Food Index (HEFI)-2019 scores and diet costs across quarters were assessed using linear regression models adjusted for age and sex. Results: Participants with lower intakes of animal-based protein foods (Q1 vs. Q4) had a higher HEFI-2019 total score (+4.0 pts, 95% CI, 0.9 to 7.1) and lower daily diet costs (-1.9 $CAD, 95% CI, -2.6 to -1.2). Participants with higher intakes of plant-based protein foods (Q4 vs. Q1) had a higher HEFI-2019 total score (+14.6 pts, 95% CI, 12.4 to 16.9) but no difference in daily diet costs (0.0$CAD, 95% CI, -0.7 to 0.7). Discussion: In a perspective of diet sustainability, results from this study among French-speaking Canadian adults suggest that a shift toward a dietary pattern focused primarily on lower amounts of animal-based protein foods may be associated with a better diet quality at lower costs. On the other hand, transitioning to a dietary pattern focused primarily on higher amounts of plant-based protein foods may further improve the diet quality at no additional cost.

BACKGROUND: Folate and vitamin B12 status during pregnancy are important for maternal and neonatal health. Maternal intake and prepregnancy body mass index (ppBMI) can influence biomarker status. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to, throughout pregnancy; 1) assess folate and B12 status including serum total folate, plasma total vitamin B12, and homocysteine (tHcy); 2) examine how these biomarkers are associated with intakes of folate and B12 and with ppBMI; and 3) determine predictors of serum total folate and plasma total vitamin B12. METHODS: In each trimester (T1, T2, and T3), food and supplement intakes of 79 French-Canadian pregnant individuals were assessed by 3 dietary recalls (R24W) and a supplement use questionnaire. Fasting blood samples were collected. Serum total folate and plasma total vitamin B12 and tHcy were assessed by immunoassay (Siemens ADVIA Centaur XP). RESULTS: Participants were 32.1 ± 3.7 y and had a mean ppBMI of 25.7 ± 5.8 kg/m2. Serum total folate concentrations were high (>45.3 nmol/L, T1: 75.4 ± 55.1, T2: 69.1 ± 44.8, T3: 72.1 ± 52.1, P = 0.48). Mean plasma total vitamin B12 concentrations were >220 pmol/L (T1: 428 ± 175, T2: 321 ± 116, T3: 336 ± 128, P < 0.0001). Mean tHcy concentrations were <11 µmol/L across trimesters. Most participants (79.6%-86.1%) had a total folic acid intake above the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL, >1000 µg/d). Supplement use accounted for 71.9%-76.1% and 35.3%-41.8% of total folic acid and vitamin B12 intakes, respectively. The ppBMI was not correlated with serum total folate (P > 0.1) but was weakly correlated with and predicted lower plasma total vitamin B12 in T3 (r = -0.23, P = 0.04; r2 = 0.08, standardized beta [sß] = -0.24, P = 0.01). Higher folic acid intakes from supplements predicted higher serum total folate (T1: r2 = 0.05, sß = 0.15, P = 0.04, T2: r2 = 0.28, sß = 0.56, P = 0.01, T3: r2 = 0.19, sß = 0.44, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Most pregnant individuals had elevated serum total folate concentrations, reflecting total folic acid intakes above the UL driven by supplement use. Vitamin B12 concentrations were generally adequate and differed by ppBMI and pregnancy stage.

We aimed to characterise the associations between first-trimester diet quality, adiposity, and glucose homeostasis measurements throughout pregnancy in a sample of 104 healthy pregnant women. Three Web-based 24-h recalls were completed, from which the Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) was calculated. At each trimester (12.5 ± 0.7, 22.8 ± 1.0, and 33.6 ± 1.3 weeks of gestation), fasting glucose and insulin were measured to compute an insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR). Subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue thicknesses were estimated by ultrasound at the end of the first trimester. Inverse associations were observed between the first-trimester AHEI and first-trimester fasting insulin (r = 0.24; p < 0.05), and HOMA-IR (r = -0.22; p < 0.05), as well as third-trimester fasting insulin (r = -0.20; p < 0.05). A trend was also observed between first-trimester AHEI and first-trimester SAT thickness (r = -0.17; p < 0.1). Pre- and early-pregnancy adiposity measurements were identified as high predictors fasting insulin concentrations throughout pregnancy. Higher early-pregnancy diet quality is associated with more favourable metabolic measurements during pregnancy.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is known to affect human milk composition. Aims of this study were to compare macronutrient and energy content of human milk of women with (GDM+) and without GDM (GDM-), to assess the association between maternal health and human milk macronutrient and energy content and association between human milk macronutrient and energy content and infant growth. Study Design and Methods: Two months after delivery, hindmilk samples were collected. Triglyceride (TG), lactose, and protein content of human milk were measured. An oral glucose tolerance test was performed. Infant weight and length at birth and 2 months were collected. Weight-for-age (WAZ) and weight-for-length z-scores were calculated. Results: Twenty-four GDM+ and 29 GDM- women were included. Protein, lactose, and energy content of human milk were similar between groups. TG concentration was higher in GDM+ than in GDM- women (6.3 ± 2.0 versus 5.3 ± 1.2, p = 0.04). This difference was no longer significant after adjustment for maternal age and infant sex (p = 0.23). Maternal age was associated with TG (r = 0.28, p = 0.04) and lactose (r = -0.30, p = 0.03), while fasting glucose was associated with proteins (r = 0.30, p = 0.03) and tended to be associated with TG (r = 0.27, p = 0.05) and energy (r = 0.24, p = 0.08). TG levels in human milk were associated with weight (ß: 0.26, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.02 to 0.50) and WAZ (ß: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.75) at 2 months among children unexposed (GDM-) to GDM, but not among children exposed (GDM+) Conclusions: In conclusion, GDM status, maternal age, and fasting glucose level were associated with human milk composition. Finally, TG in human milk was associated with infant growth among GDM- children but not among GDM+ children. ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02872402.

Background: Healthy eating during pregnancy has favorable effects on glycemic control and is associated with a lower risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). According to Diabetes Canada, there is a need for an effective and acceptable intervention that could improve glucose homeostasis and support pregnant individuals at risk for GDM. Aims: This unicentric randomized controlled trial (RCT) aims to evaluate the effects of a nutritional intervention initiated early in pregnancy, on glucose homeostasis in 150 pregnant individuals at risk for GDM, compared to usual care. Methods: Population: 150 pregnant individuals ≥18 years old, at ≤14 weeks of pregnancy, and presenting ≥1 risk factor for GDM according to Diabetes Canada guidelines. Intervention: The nutritional intervention initiated in the first trimester is based on the health behavior change theory during pregnancy and on Canada's Food Guide recommendations. It includes (1) four individual counseling sessions with a registered dietitian using motivational interviewing (12, 18, 24, and 30 weeks), with post-interview phone call follow-ups, aiming to develop and achieve S.M.A.R.T. nutritional objectives (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound); (2) 10 informative video clips on healthy eating during pregnancy developed by our team and based on national guidelines, and (3) a virtual support community via a Facebook group. Control: Usual prenatal care. Protocol: This RCT includes three on-site visits (10-14, 24-26, and 34-36 weeks) during which a 2-h oral glucose tolerance test is done and blood samples are taken. At each trimester and 3 months postpartum, participants complete web-based questionnaires, including three validated 24-h dietary recalls to assess their diet quality using the Healthy Eating Food Index 2019. Primary outcome: Difference in the change in fasting blood glucose (from the first to the third trimester) between groups. This study has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec-Université Laval. Discussion: This RCT will determine whether a nutritional intervention initiated early in pregnancy can improve glucose homeostasis in individuals at risk for GDM and inform Canadian stakeholders on improving care trajectories and policies for pregnant individuals at risk for GDM. Automated, self-administered, Web-based 24-h dietary recall tools are increasingly available for nutrition research in different settings, particularly in epidemiological studies and national surveys because of their practicality and efficiency. However, the usability of different 24-h dietary recall tools must be assessed and compared for use in specific populations as it is a major driver of the response rate and retention of participants. The primary aim of this study was to compare the usability of two validated, self-administered, web-based 24-h dietary recall tools available for the Canadian population: the R24W and the 2018 Canadian version of the ASA24. The R24W was developed in French for primary use in the province of Québec, Canada while the ASA24 was developed in English for primary use in the USA and recently adapted and translated for use in French-speaking Canadian adults. Whether the R24W and the ASA24-Canada-2018 yield similar nutritional data was also tested. In this randomized crossover study, 48 women and 20 men (mean age of 35 ± 14 years; range: 19−79 years) recruited in the province of Quebec completed the R24W and the ASA24-Canada-2018 in French twice on each occasion. Participants also completed the System Usability Scale (SUS), a reliable and valid scale giving a global view of subjective assessments of usability. Mean SUS score as well as mean dietary intakes of energy, nutrients and food groups generated by each tool were compared using mixed model analyses for repeated measures. On a scale of 0 to 100, the mean SUS scores (±SD) for the R24W and the ASA24-Canada-2018 were 81 ± 2 and 58 ± 2, respectively (p < 0.0001). 84% of participants stated that they would prefer to use the R24W if they were invited to complete additional 24-h dietary recalls. No significant difference was found between the R24W and the ASA24-Canada-2018 for the intake of energy, proteins, lipids, saturated fatty acids, carbohydrates, fibers, sodium and vegetables and fruits. In sum, while the R24W and the ASA24-Canada-2018 generate comparable self-reported dietary intake data, the R24W showed a better usability than the ASA24-Canada-2018 in a sample of French-speaking adults from the province of Quebec.

The aim of this study was to assess the association between daily diet costs and the Healthy Eating Food Index (HEFI)-2019, an index that reflects the alignment of dietary patterns to recommendations on healthy food choices in the 2019 Canada's Food Guide (CFG). Dietary intake data from 24 h recalls, completed between 2015 and 2017, of 1147 French-speaking participants of the web-based multicenter cross-sectional PRÉDicteurs Individuels, Sociaux et Environnementaux (PREDISE) study in Quebec were used. Diet costs were calculated from dietary recall data using a Quebec-specific 2015-2016 Nielsen food price database. Usual dietary intakes and diet costs were estimated using the National Cancer Institute's multivariate method. Linear regression models were used to evaluate associations between diet costs and HEFI-2019 scores. When standardized for energy intake, a higher HEFI-2019 score (75th vs. 25th percentiles) was associated with a 1.09 $CAD higher daily diet cost (95% CI, 0.73 to 1.45). This positive association was consistent among different sociodemographic subgroups based on sex, age, education, household income, and administrative region of residence. A higher daily diet cost was associated with a higher HEFI-2019 score for the Vegetables and fruits, Beverage, Grain foods ratio, Fatty acids ratio, Saturated fats, and Free sugars components, but with a lower score for the Sodium component. These results suggest that for a given amount of calories, a greater adherence to the 2019 CFG recommendations on healthy food choices is associated with an increased daily diet cost. This highlights the challenge of conciliating affordability and healthfulness when developing national dietary guidelines in the context of diet sustainability.

BACKGROUND: Knowing the percentage of women planning a pregnancy who meet preconception dietary and physical activity (PA) guidelines and which health-related preconception factors are associated with body mass index (BMI) could help improve preconception care. OBJECTIVES: In a study conducted in women who were planning to conceive, the aims were to describe and compare eating and PA habits to current guidelines, as well as to identify the factors associated with BMI. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: From 2017 to 2020, women planning to conceive within the next year (n = 217) were recruited in the province of Québec (Canada) to participate in the Apports Nutritionnels durant la GrossessE - Cohorte Contrôle study. Among them, 184 (84.8%) were included in the analyses. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Women completed three (90.2%) or two (9.8%) Web-based 24-hour dietary recalls and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Weight and height as well as the presence/absence of weight/body image concerns were self-reported. Eating and PA habits were compared with dietary reference intakes and Canadian guidelines, respectively. STATISTICAL ANALYSES: Descriptive statistics were used to describe the sample, eating and PA habits, as well as adherence to guidelines. A multivariable regression analysis was performed to identify the factors associated with BMI. RESULTS: On average, women were aged 30.8 ± 4.1 years and identified as White (94.0%). Most of them had weight/body image concerns (58.7%), 54.6% of whom had a normal body weight. Overall, 42.3% engaged in 150 minutes/week or more of moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA and 84.8% consumed <135 g alcoholic beverages per week. Mean dietary intake was below Dietary Reference Intakes for carbohydrates, vitamins D and E, and above Dietary Reference Intakes for total fat and folic acid. Factors associated with a higher BMI were weight/body image concerns (ß = 1.83; R2 = 13.0%), higher dietary protein intake (ß = .05; R2 = 4.0%), lower income (ß = .85; R2 = 2.9%), no folic acid supplementation (ß = .83; R2 = 2.5%), spending less time in moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (ß = -.006; R2 = 2.4%), eating <2 snacks (ß = .75; R2 = 2.2%), and <3 meals (ß = 1.38; R2 = 1.5%) daily. CONCLUSION: Women planning to conceive do not have optimal eating and PA behaviors. Modifiable factors associated with BMI in preconception were identified.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical and community guidelines recommend lifestyle (i.e. diet and physical activity) interventions for cardiometabolic conditions (including type 2 diabetes), yet current evidence suggests limited and variable services in primary care and public health settings. New implementation research studies are needed to ensure maximal effectiveness, equity and efficiency across all population subgroups and within the context of health systems. Such work will benefit from use of similar core measures and outcome indicators across studies. This Delphi process was undertaken by a new interdisciplinary volunteer researcher network to identify research priorities and core measures for such studies. METHODS: Interested network members completed 2 rounds of a modified Delphi process delivered through online questionnaire and teleconferences. Consensus was defined as the median and interquartile range within the top third of a 9-point scale. RESULTS: Twenty-five of 53 (47%) members and 18 (34%) participants completed the round 1 and round 2 surveys, respectively. Of 22 possible research priorities, 4 were rated high priority with consensus, including evaluating the efficacy and effectiveness of interventions in place, improving existing interventions for sustainability and clinical and public health research to advance existing knowledge to develop new capacities. Only 15 of the 93 measures and indicators proposed achieved similar consensus. CONCLUSIONS: This first effort confirms broad agreement on research priorities and limited agreement on core indicators/measures. The results provide a starting point for further development of common measures for implementation research in lifestyle studies addressing cardiometabolic conditions.

RESUMO

Machine learning (ML) algorithms may help better understand the complex interactions among factors that influence dietary choices and behaviors. The aim of this study was to explore whether ML algorithms are more accurate than traditional statistical models in predicting vegetable and fruit (VF) consumption. A large array of features (2,452 features from 525 variables) encompassing individual and environmental information related to dietary habits and food choices in a sample of 1,147 French-speaking adult men and women was used for the purpose of this study. Adequate VF consumption, which was defined as 5 servings/d or more, was measured by averaging data from three web-based 24 h recalls and used as the outcome to predict. Nine classification ML algorithms were compared to two traditional statistical predictive models, logistic regression and penalized regression (Lasso). The performance of the predictive ML algorithms was tested after the implementation of adjustments, including normalizing the data, as well as in a series of sensitivity analyses such as using VF consumption obtained from a web-based food frequency questionnaire (wFFQ) and applying a feature selection algorithm in an attempt to reduce overfitting. Logistic regression and Lasso predicted adequate VF consumption with an accuracy of 0.64 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.58-0.70) and 0.64 (95%CI: 0.60-0.68) respectively. Among the ML algorithms tested, the most accurate algorithms to predict adequate VF consumption were the support vector machine (SVM) with either a radial basis kernel or a sigmoid kernel, both with an accuracy of 0.65 (95%CI: 0.59-0.71). The least accurate ML algorithm was the SVM with a linear kernel with an accuracy of 0.55 (95%CI: 0.49-0.61). Using dietary intake data from the wFFQ and applying a feature selection algorithm had little to no impact on the performance of the algorithms. In summary, ML algorithms and traditional statistical models predicted adequate VF consumption with similar accuracies among adults. These results suggest that additional research is needed to explore further the true potential of ML in predicting dietary behaviours that are determined by complex interactions among several individual, social and environmental factors.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the uptake of nutrigenetic testing through direct-to-consumer services and healthcare professionals, systematic reviews determining scientific validity are limited in this field. The objective of this review was to: retrieve, synthesise and assess the quality of evidence (confidence) for nutrigenetic approaches related to the effect of genetic variation on plasma lipid, lipoprotein and apolipoprotein responsiveness to omega-3 fatty acid intake. DESIGN: A systematic review was conducted using three search engines (Embase, Web of Science and Medline) for articles published up until 1 August 2020. We aimed to systematically search, identify (select) and provide a narrative synthesis of all studies that assessed nutrigenetic associations/interactions for genetic variants (comparators) influencing the plasma lipid, lipoprotein and/or apolipoprotein response (outcomes) to omega-3 fatty acid intake (intervention/exposure) in humans-both paediatric and adult populations (population). We further aimed to assess the overall quality of evidence for specific priority nutrigenetic associations/interactions based on the following inclusion criteria: nutrigenetic associations/interactions reported for the same genetic variants (comparators) influencing the same plasma lipid, lipoprotein and/or apolipoprotein response (outcomes) to omega-3 fatty acid intake (intervention/exposure) in humans-both paediatric and adult populations (population) in at least two independent studies, irrespective of the findings. Risk of bias was assessed in individual studies. Evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach with a modification to further consider biological plausibility. RESULTS: Out of 1830 articles screened, 65 met the inclusion criteria for the narrative synthesis (n=23 observational, n=42 interventional); of these, 25 met the inclusion criteria for GRADE evidence evaluation. Overall, current evidence is insufficient for gene-diet associations related to omega-3 fatty acid intake on plasma apolipoproteins, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol and LDL particle size. However, there is strong (GRADE rating: moderate quality) evidence to suggest that male APOE-E4 carriers (rs429358, rs7412) exhibit significant triglyceride reductions in response to omega-3-rich fish oil with a dose-response effect. Moreover, strong (GRADE rating: high quality) evidence suggests that a 31-SNP nutrigenetic risk score can predict plasma triglyceride responsiveness to omega-3-rich fish oil in adults with overweight/obesity from various ethnicities. CONCLUSIONS: Most evidence in this area is weak, but two specific nutrigenetic interactions exhibited strong evidence, with generalisability limited to specific populations. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between individual and environmental determinants of diet quality with diet quality of children exposed to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM+) and unexposed (GDM-); to study the association between mother and child vegetables and fruit (VF) intakes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred forty-two children (104 GDM+; 38 GDM-) aged 6.2 ± 2.5 years. VARIABLES: Canadian Healthy Eating Index 2007 (HEI-C) and VF were obtained with 2 24-hour dietary recall questionnaires in children. Maternal VF was obtained by a validated food frequency questionnaire, and weight and height were measured. Sociodemographic determinants were obtained by questionnaires. ANALYSIS: Linear regression models were used to evaluate the association between individual and environmental determinants and the HEI-C score with interaction for GDM status. RESULTS: Family meals were associated with HEI-C among GDM- but not GDM+ children (ß = 9.97, P = 0.01 and ß = -0.41, P = 0.84, respectively; P for interaction = 0.02). Children's age (ß = -1.45; 95% confidence interval, -2.19 to -0.72; P < 0.001) was a determinant of HEI-C among all children. Maternal VF intakes were positively associated with children's VF intake (r = 0.30, P < 0.001, r2 = 0.09), with association of larger variance among GDM- children (r = 0.38, r2 = 0.14, P = 0.02) than GDM+ children (r = 0.23, r2 = 0.05, P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: The food environment at home was associated differently with the diet quality of GDM+ and GDM- children. Whether targeting family meals and maternal diet quality is a good strategy to improve children's diet quality among GDM+ children needs to be further investigated.

The objective of this study was to validate an automated self-administered 24-hour dietary recall web application (R24W) against recovery biomarkers for sodium, potassium and protein intakes and to identify individual characteristics associated with misreporting in a sample of 61 men and 69 women aged 20-65 years from Québec City, Canada. Each participant completed 3 dietary recalls using the R24W, provided two 24-hour urinary samples and completed questionnaires to document psychosocial factors. Mean reported intakes were 2.2%, 2.1% and 5.0% lower than the urinary reference values, respectively, for sodium, potassium and proteins (significant difference for proteins only (p = 0.04)). Deattenuated correlations between the self-reported intake and biomarkers were significant for sodium (r = 0.48), potassium (r = 0.56) and proteins (r = 0.68). Cross-classification showed that 39.7% (sodium), 42.9% (potassium) and 42.1% (proteins) of participants were ranked into the same quartile with both methods and only 4.8% (sodium), 3.2% (potassium) and 0.8% (proteins) were ranked in opposite quartiles. Lower body esteem related to appearance was associated with sodium underreporting in women (r = 0.33, p = 0.006). No other individual factor was found to be associated with misreporting. These results suggest that the R24W has a good validity for the assessment of sodium, potassium and protein intakes in a sample of French-speaking adults. Novelty: The validity of an automated self-administered 24-hour dietary recall web application named the R24W was tested using urinary biomarkers. According to 7 criteria, the R24W was found to have a good validity to assess self-reported intakes of sodium, potassium and proteins.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are found in every environmental medium and are chemically diverse. Their presence in water resources can negatively impact the health of both human and wildlife. Currently, there are no mandatory screening mandates or regulations for EDC levels in complex water samples globally. Bioassays, which allow quantifying in vivo or in vitro biological effects of chemicals are used commonly to assess acute toxicity in water. The existing OECD framework to identify single-compound EDCs offers a set of bioassays that are validated for the Estrogen-, Androgen-, and Thyroid hormones, and for Steroidogenesis pathways (EATS). In this review, we discussed bioassays that could be potentially used to screen EDCs in water resources, including in vivo and in vitro bioassays using invertebrates, fish, amphibians, and/or mammalians species. Strengths and weaknesses of samples preparation for complex water samples are discussed. We also review how to calculate the Effect-Based Trigger values, which could serve as thresholds to determine if a given water sample poses a risk based on existing quality standards. This work aims to assist governments and regulatory agencies in developing a testing strategy towards regulation of EDCs in water resources worldwide. The main recommendations include 1) opting for internationally validated cell reporter in vitro bioassays to reduce animal use & cost; 2) testing for cell viability (a critical parameter) when using in vitro bioassays; and 3) evaluating the recovery of the water sample preparation method selected. This review also highlights future research avenues for the EDC screening revolution (e.g., 3D tissue culture, transgenic animals, OMICs, and Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs)).

Mothers' eating behaviours are important to ensure the health and well-being of themselves and their families. Recent research has pointed to self-compassion, defined as extending kindness to oneself in times of perceived inadequacy or general suffering, as a trait associated with healthy forms of eating, such as intuitive eating, and reduced maladaptive forms of eating, such as emotional eating. However, little is known about the psychological mechanism through which self-compassion relates to healthy eating behaviours. This study examined 100 mothers' levels of self-compassion, body esteem and eating behaviours. Structural equation modelling revealed that self-compassion was positively associated with diet quality and intuitive eating, while being negatively associated with emotional eating. Moreover, these links occurred, in part, due to higher body esteem. This points to a mechanism through which self-compassion may positively contribute to mothers' healthy eating behaviours. The implications for eating outcomes and women's health are discussed.
